Aljezur, W Algarve - Portugal
The contrast between powerful, untamed nature and the calm rhythm of everyday life is what best describes Aljezur.
What remains of a once prominent wine-producing area are small plots of two or three thousand square meters, once used by families to produce their own wine.
We re-claimed these old parcels and now cultivate around 3 hectares of land between the municipalities of Aljezur and Rogil. These vineyards are planted with field blends of local grape varieties propagated decades ago by local farmers. Most of these cultivars remain unknown, what matters is the expression of each parcel as a whole and its changing profile from one season to the other.
Similar to other regions of Portugal, old plots are entirely cultivated by hand because of their uneven pattern and irregular shape. In such a system it’s inevitable that an intimate dialogue develops between the farmer and his piece of land. The endless search of harmony and precision of gestures are the foundation of our work in the field.
The power of the Atlantic Ocean shapes the flow of time itself. Gusts of fresh, salty air, the sound of the waves, and a deafening presence accompany the long days beneath the southern sun. What we aim to harvest each year are grapes that taste of this land and ocean, with subtle varietal profiles revealing the intimate nature of each site.
